Guided tours in Aleph
This page gathers together information concerning visits to Aleph, both
from the point of view of the visitor and from the point of view of the
guide. Note that ALL visits to CERN must comply with
Safety
Instruction IS44
(aussi en français). Please make sure you are familiar with that
document.
Forthcoming visits
The visits service is often looking for Aleph guides. Help from
members of the Aleph collaboration is very welcome! The current call for
guides is available here.
How to organize a visit to Aleph
All members of Aleph who have an access card for the Aleph pit are allowed
to take visitors to the Aleph pit under the following conditions:
-
Private visits for no more than 6 visitors can be made under
the guidance of an Aleph member with no special formality. Visitor
access cards must be used: they are available at the Aleph secretariat,
or in the Control Room during the shift period. During the
shift period,
please inform the Control Room at the start and end of the visit.
-
Visits organised by Aleph members, for more than 6 visitors, must
be announced to the visits
service in advance. The visit will not
be possible if the visits service has already planned to take a large group
to Aleph at the same time, so please give them as much advance warning
as possible. The tour must follow the rules for visits to Aleph described in the next section. The organiser of the visit must ensure that
he or she has sufficient guides for the visit.
All other visits (i.e. visits not organised by an Aleph member) must
be organised via the visits
service and guided by official CERN guides. If the visit includes VIPs
(e.g. politicians) or journalists, you should contact the VIP
service or the press
office respectively.
Rules for visits to Aleph
All visits to Aleph must obey the following rules, in addition to the standard
rules for public visits:
-
The guide MUST use his access card upon entrance and exit. The rest of
the group can use the 'sas' or the crush bar door.
-
The guide must sign the PZ logbook at entrance and exit, and call the control room
when there are shifts.
Access can be denied by the SLIMOS if there
are too many visitors, more than 10 visitors per guide, or a safety incident.
-
Visitors are not allowed in the barracks, and on top of the detector. They
must follow the standard
itinerary, indicated on the floor. This restriction does not apply
for private visits organized and guided by an Aleph member.
How to become a guide
Anyone who has been at CERN for more than three months and is planning
to stay for at least 12 months is strongly encouraged to follow the training
to become an official CERN guide. The training involves a dedicated safety
course and public speaking course (about one day in total). Please read
the visits
service web pages for more details. It may be of interest that the
visits service makes a small payment to all Saturday guides, and to weekday
guides who do not have a CERN employment contract.
From time to time, the visits service requests help from the experiments
to find guides for specific visits on particularly busy days. In Aleph
this is normally announced via an ALNEWS. Any member of Aleph may (and
is encouraged to) help on these occasions, he or she just needs to be familiar
with the standard
itinerary and the rules for visits to Aleph listed above. The same
applies for additional guides who may be needed on visits organised by
an Aleph member.
